When did you move to Spain? What made you move? Do you miss the UK? How many times have you been asked these questions?

For many it seems the underlying question is “are you disappointed with your move” or just as likely “was it disappointment with events in the UK that made you move?”

Throughout our lives we build up expectations from the simple such as I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow to the major life events – I hope my house sells soon or I am praying that such a person gets well again soon.

I have met a number of people who turn to God only in a crisis and then blame Him when things don’t work out. It’s strange isn’t it that we want total freedom in our lives - freedom to go where we want, do what we want, say what we want, think what we want - and then wonder why God doesn’t seem to interfere just to keep us living in the freedom we wanted!

Of course one of the problems is that God might have answered our prayer but we are disappointed with the answer. Max Lucado says “Be honest. Are we glad when He says no to what we want and says yes to what we need? Not always. If we ask for a new marriage and He says honour the one you’ve got, we aren’t happy. If we ask for healing and He says learn through the pain we aren’t happy. If we ask for more money and He says treasure the unseen we aren’t always happy.

When God doesn’t do what we want it’s not easy. Never has been. Never will be. But faith is the conviction that God knows more than we do about this life and He will get us through it.

Disappointment is caused by unfulfilled expectations and can be cured by revamped expectations. We need to know that God is still in control and won’t be over until He says so. Life’s problems are not a reason to quit but to sit tight.”

“Corrie Ten Boom said “When the train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark you don’t jump out – you sit there and trust the driver to bring us out into the light.”

Next time you face disappointment, don’t panic, don’t jump out, be patient and remember God is in control and it isn’t over until it’s over.
